From handouts to lasting change

The Thabo Mbeki settlement was established in 2008 after a community was evicted near Lanseria Airport. Today, about 1 300 dwellings and 6 000 residents call it home — without formal land rights.

Tiisetso was founded in late 2019 after years of emergency relief work revealed a hard truth: handouts aren't sustainable. We shifted focus to economic independence — building a Skills Development Centre using local labour and eco-bricks made from plastic waste collected by residents themselves.

"We have a vision to shift the statistics — to give young people a real path forward, away from gangsterism and toward possibility."

Built by the community, for the community

The Skills Centre was constructed using "Eco Bricks" — PET plastic bottles collected and filled with waste by community residents. Several tons of plastic waste were recycled in its construction, creating income for residents and giving the settlement its own sustainable landmark.

Eight programs. One mission.

Every program is designed to create lasting self-sufficiency — not dependency. Each initiative is run from the Tiisetso Skills Centre at the heart of the settlement.
